With that said, here were my two disappointments. They both felt like scenes that I could really see in my mind’s eye, like they were perfectly written to become a tv show or movie. There were scenes that felt really vivid to me the party in the wine cellar, and the creepy gentleman’s club where everyone had to don masquerade masks were particularly good bits of storytelling. None of that was the case in the Paris Apartment. It’s always a bummer when you guess the answer before the end of the book, but it’s even worse when the twist you’re waiting for is SO out of left field that it feels completely contrived. The big reveal about the inhabitants made so much sense, but was still so surprising to me (aka the best kind of twist!). I was fascinated trying to figure out how these people were involved with Ben, and I was shocked when it all came together. The mystery itself was captivating and the characters living in the apartment were both odd and unlikeable in all the right ways. So let’s start with the things that I liked. Are they just an odd bunch? Or are they all suspects in her brother’s disappearance? There was a lot about this book that I liked, and two things that I didn’t. The neighbors are eccentric, and not at all welcoming. There’s something strange going on in this building, and Ben’s situation gets more muddled by the day. Soon, Jess is embroiled in the mystery of her missing brother. This apartment is way nicer than she expected, Ben doesn’t answer the door, and when she finally gets inside…is that blood on the cat?

But when she arrives, Jess knows something is wrong immediately. He doesn’t sound too excited about her visit, but grudgingly agrees to let Jess come. Her perfect brother, Ben, is a journalist living in Paris working on a new story. Jess has run into some trouble in London, and she knows the perfect escape.
